Bateau
Artist: Danielle Dontigny et Anne-Marie Poitras
Year: 1984
Materials: Concrete, parging, steel
The artwork Bateau is installed on the shore on the Rivière des Prairies in Laval. It poetically evokes a vessel exposed to the winds from all directions, ready to start its journey. It is integrated in the landscape and is destined never to get to the water, as it is made of parged concrete and steel. Although it cannot float, it is an artwork made to last and to stay close to the public. Children can therefore imagine themselves as its captain.
The harsh environmental conditions and the use of the artwork as a playground left marks in its materials. The conservation treatment mainly consisted in a deep cleaning, in filling the concrete and parging losses, and replacing the missing steel cables.
