Signe solaire

Artist: Jean Lefébure

Year: 1967

Materials: Fiberglass, painted steel, concrete, wood

Signe solaire is a large-scale artwork which was created in 1967 for Montreal’s World Exhibition. Made of fibreglass and resin, this monolith is visually striking with its simplicity and soft golden shimmer. It is one of the rare sculpures made by artist Jean Lefébure, who was mainly known as a painter.

In 2019, the sculpture was in a very poor state because of its exposure to harsh environmental conditions and had lost its characteristic colour. The interior had also been eaten by insects. After a complete evaluation of the artwork’s condition, it was treated according to the artist’s wishes. After the conservation treatment, the sculpture had retrieved its structural integrity and its rich original colour.
