Posthumous portrait of Louis-Joseph Papineau
Artist: Attributed to Napoléon Bourassa
Date: unknown
Materials: Patinated plaster, wood, iron alloy
Service: Restoration
This posthumous portrait of Louis-Joseph Papineau is a sculpture in patinated plaster. Multiple copies of this portrait exist and are kept at the Musée national des beaux-arts de Québec. This object is a rare testament to the tradition of posthumous portraits, common in the 19th century, which involved casting the face of the deceased.
This portrait is made of hollow plaster reinforced with two pieces of wood on the reverse. It was broken in many pieces after an accident. The fragments were adhered back together, and the plaster losses were filled and inpainted so that the marks of the unfortunate accident are not visible anymore and that the sculpture retrieves its visual unity.
